The first Census of Assam was held in 1872 along with the rest of the country non synchronously. In this census, the two districts of Sylhet and Cachar formed a portion of the Dacca Commissioner’s division. The district of Goalpara was attached to the Commissionership of Kuch Bihar, while the remaining districts of Assam or Brahmaputra valley and the Hill districts formed a separate division of Bengal under a Commissioner.


In Census 2011, 4 new districts were formed in Assam. Consequently, the number of districts increased to the total number of 27. The new districts created in this period are Chirang(Carved out of Bongaigaon), Baksa (Carved out of a part of Nalbari, Barpeta, Kamrup and small portion of Darrang district), Kamrup(Metro) (Carved out of Kamrup) and Udalguri(Carved out of Darrang).
