The 16th-century Vrindavani Vastra, preserved for over a century in Britain, is scheduled to be displayed in the State in 2027. The decision brings into focus a remarkable journey that spans devotion, royal patronage, disappearance, rediscovery, and global recognition. Late 16th Century: Birth of a Sacred Textile: The Vrindavani Vastra was created during the final years of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva in the latter part of the 16th century. While staying at Patbausi, Sankardeva came into close association with the Koch ruler King Naranarayan and his brother Chilarai, the kingdom’s commander-in-chief. Historical accounts note that Sankardeva visited the Tatikuchi area near Barpeta daily, guiding the weavers in transforming sacred imagination into woven form.The Vrindavani Vastra was woven using the complex lampas technique, a sophisticated fabric structure employing two sets of warp threads and multiple sets of weft threads. This technique enabled the creation of intricate pictorial imagery directly on the loom. Woven entirely in silk, including Assam’s prized muga silk, the cloth was originally produced as 15 separate panels, later assembled into a single continuous tapestry. Over generations, its Assamese origin faded from memory, and it came to be regarded locally as a Buddhist or Tibetan artefact. 1903–1905: Colonial Encounter and Museum TransferThe next documented chapter of the Vastra’s journey unfolded in the early 20th century. In 1903, British journalist Perceval Landon travelled to India and Tibet to cover the coronation of King Edward VII for The Daily Mail and The Times. He accompanied Sir Francis Younghusband during the British expedition to Tibet aimed at expanding trade relations. During his visit to Gobishi, Landon encountered the large illustrated cloth hanging in a Buddhist monastery. Struck by its exceptional beauty and craftsmanship, he obtained the textile from the monks. On 14 January 1905, Landon deposited the cloth at the British Museum, London. There, it was preserved as a rare example of Tibetan embroidery, alongside other artefacts recovered from Tibet. Born on April 17, 1806, in Charing, Assam, he was not only a visionary entrepreneur and public leader but also one of the first Assamese to take a stand against British colonial rule. His contributions and sacrifices laid the groundwork for future resistance movements in Assam and earned him the honor of being considered the first martyr of Assam's freedom struggle. Maniram Dewan was born into an influential family with a strong heritage in Assamese society. His father, Ramdutta Baruah, held a respectable position in the Ahom kingdom, and this lineage provided Maniram with both education and exposure to administration from an early age. Maniram displayed anentrepreneurial spirit early on and pursued various business ventures, which would later become crucial in his fight against the British. <h2>Maniram Dewan’s Contribution to Assam’s Tea Industry: A Pioneer’s Journey</h2>Maniram Dewan is often credited with being one of the pioneers of Assam's tea industry. In the early 1830s, when the British East India Company was exploring commercial tea cultivation in Assam, Maniram played a pivotal role in establishing the tea gardens. He initially collaborated with the British and provided valuable insights into the local conditions and resources necessary for tea cultivation. By 1839, Maniram had established his own tea gardens, becoming one of the first indigenous tea planters in Assam. His plantations at Chenimora and Singlo were among the earliest in the region. However, his entrepreneurial success soonbecame a source of conflict with the British authorities, who sought to monopolize the tea industry.<h2> </h2><h2>Rising Tensions with the British: Maniram Dewan’s Defiance and Rebellion</h2>Maniram's relationship with the British began to sour as he witnessed their exploitative policies and disregard for the local populace. The British monopoly over the tea industry, combined with oppressive revenue policies, led to widespread discontent among the local Assamese, including Maniram. His disenchantment grew further when the British disregarded his contributions and sought to undermine his business ventures. Involvement in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Rebellion_of_1857" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Sepoy Mutiny of 1857</a>. The discontentment with British rule reached a climax in 1857 with the outbreak of the Sepoy Mutiny, also known as the First War of Indian Independence. Although the mutiny primarily took place in northern and central India, its ripples were felt across the country, including Assam. Maniram Dewan saw the uprising as an opportunity to challengeBritish authority in Assam. Maniram began to secretly mobilize support against the British. He contacted several local chieftains and urged them to rise against the colonial rulers. His plan included the coordination of a local revolt in Assam, synchronized with the larger mutiny happening across India. Maniram believed that by leveraging the widespread discontent, they could overthrow British rule in Assam. The British authorities, however, got wind of Maniram's plans. In early 1858, he wasarrested along with his associate, Piyali Barua, on charges of conspiring against the British government. After a swift trial, Maniram Dewan was sentenced to death. On February 26, 1858, Maniram Dewan was executed by hanging in Jorhat, Assam. His associate, Piyali Barua, met the same fate. Their execution was meant to serve as adeterrent to others who might consider rebellion. However, instead of quelling the spirit of resistance, it galvanized the local populace and immortalized Maniram Dewan as a martyr.<h2> </h2><h2>Legacy of Maniram Dewan</h2>Maniram Dewan's execution did not mark the end of his influence. On the contrary, he became a symbol of resistance against British rule in Assam. His legacy continued toinspire future generations of freedom fighters in the region.Beyond his role in the freedom struggle, Maniram Dewan's contributions to Assam's economy, particularly the tea industry, were significant. He demonstrated the potential for indigenous enterprise and laid the groundwork for Assam's eventual emergence as amajor tea producer.&nbsp; Maniram Dewan was also a patron of Assamese culture and literature. He supported various cultural activities and played a key role in the preservation and promotion of Assamese heritage. In independent India, Maniram Dewan's contributions have been recognized and celebrated. Various institutions and landmarks in Assam are named after him, ensuring that his legacy is remembered.&nbsp; His life and sacrifices are a testament to the indomitable spirit of Assam's fight for freedom.
